Ever since we first looked at this house, we've kept talking about how we can't wait to get our hands on the floors. See, the previous owner, apparently a person with weak knees or ankles or possibly both, seemed to think that it would be a good idea to install floating Pergo floor on top of carpet padding. Or perhaps he lost a bet. The effect was kind of like trampoline-floors. Add to that already dubious decision a ton of water damage, and you can understand why we could frequently be found daydreaming (sometime complete with drooling) about introducing a crowbar to these floors. Well, we were the official owners for about 17 minutes before that dream came true. And boy, was it satisfying! With the help of a few good friends, we had the entire second floor and the living room defloored in a few hours.
Of course, it's not just tearing out the planks... that's the easy part. The tough (though satisfying) part is yanking out all, and I do mean all, the staples. Whoever installed this carpet padding was seriously staple happy. An ongoing project for a few days has been de-stapling. It gets oddly mesmerizing and you sort of start having staples on the brain....I've been dreaming about it.
We actually might be able to sell the Pergo which hadn't been stained by the water (the leak was localized) and make some money on this particular project. We went to bed happy on our first day of home ownership. :)
Floor before it met the crowbar: (more on the wall treatment later)
Cost:
Already owned crowbars: $0
